The first full trailer for Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit has finally arrived. Waititi follows the blockbuster Thor Ragnarok with a dark comedy satire with an all-star cast featuring Thomasin McKenzie, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Waititi as Jojo’s imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler.
Any new project from Waititi is of immediate interest, and as he’s going back to the MCU with Thor: Love and Thunder, this might be the last low-key offering from Waititi from quite some time. On the upside, we get another Thor movie guided by Waititi, and Natalie Portman is going to be returning to the franchise as the Goddess of Thunder. Plus, a second season of the brilliant What We Do In The Shadows will be debuting early in the New Year.
Naturally, there is now an extra layer of satire to enjoy as Jojo Rabbit was a Fox Searchlight project, and now it’s owned by Disney. A cheeky coming of age comedy featuring an oafish Hitler as an imaginary friend, that truly is a first from Disney.
The story follows an awkward young German boy (Roman Griffin) raised by a single mother (Scarlett Johansson), and whose only ally is his imaginary friend Hitler (Waititi). His naïve patriotism is tested when he meets a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) who upends his world views, forcing him to face his biggest fear.
