A Fresh Bite for a Franchise That Still Has Life

It’s taken its sweet time shambling across the Atlantic, but Tales of the Walking Dead has finally arrived in the UK on DVD, and Blu-ray, and it’s well worth the wait.

After more than a decade of expanding timelines, spin-offs, and apocalypse-weary survivors, this bold anthology entry proves there’s still plenty of bite left in the Walking Dead universe.

Rather than following one core group of characters trudging endlessly toward another grim outpost, Tales mostly breaks free of the familiar herd. Each self-contained story explores a different corner of the undead world, offering a mix of tones that range from philosophical to downright feral. The result is something rare in a long-running horror franchise: creative freedom.

The cast list reads like a who’s who of eclectic talent — from Terry Crews and Olivia Munn in a surprisingly heartfelt road story, to Parker Posey and Jillian Bell trapped in a twisted time loop of their own doom. And then there’s Samantha Morton, reprising her powerhouse role as Alpha in a haunting origin episode that reminds you exactly why she became one of The Walking Dead’s most chilling figures.

Stripped of the mask and the mythology, Morton delivers something raw and deeply tragic, a glimpse at the pain behind the monster, and one of the strongest hours the franchise has produced.

Each episode feels like its own short film, exploring how ordinary people cope, collapse, or claw back meaning in a world long past saving. It’s this variety — tonal, thematic, and emotional — that keeps Tales feeling fresh and strangely hopeful amid the gore. What’s most exciting is that this format feels like the true evolution of the Walking Dead brand. After years of sprawling epics and overlapping spin-offs, the anthology structure gives the universe room to breathe, a creative sandbox where new voices and perspectives can roam freely. With the sequel series More Tales of the Walking Dead,  it looks like AMC has finally found a sustainable, story-first way to keep its apocalypse alive.

Darkly funny, unexpectedly moving, and as full of humanity as horror, Tales of the Walking Dead isn’t just another spin-off; it’s a rebirth. Much more of this please AMC.

Tales of the Walking Dead is out now on DVD and Blu-ray.
