There’s not long to wait until the fourth Purge movie hits cinemas with the soon to be released prequel, The First Purge. You might think that one visit to the dystopian future America was enough, but there’s a lot more purging heading our way. Blumhouse productions are doubling down on the franchise this year with a ten-part TV series spin-off. The appropriately titled The Purge TV Series is set to launch in the US this September, and the first trailer has landed.
The small screen spin-off will take a creative leaf from 24’s book, each episode of The Purge will focus on a different hour of this particular annual crime-free night. Well, it’s only crime-free because all crime is legal for twelve hours. A strong case could be made for there being twelve episodes, but let’s not get too picky.
Conceptually, The Purge movies are fantastic, and their cheeky marketing campaigns have been spot on, that said, all three entries thus far has yet to deliver a film worthy of the socially reflective concept. I like the idea of the TV series, and the trailer suggests we might just get some character development beyond who wants to murder who.
Purge creator James DeMonaco stepped back from directing the movie franchise to write and produce the series. Starring Gabriel Chavarria as Miguel, Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell, Lili Simmons, Hannah Anderson, Lee Tergesen, William Baldwin and Fiona Dourif. There are no details on when the show will arrive in the UK, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
The First Purge is released in UK cinemas on July 4.
Based on the hit movie franchise from Blumhouse productions, THE PURGE revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in a dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. Tying them all together is a mysterious saviour who’s impeccably equipped for everything the night throws at them. As the clock winds down with their fates hanging in the balance, each character is forced to reckon with their pasts as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.
