A crumbling marriage, a demonically possessed child and a cursed pagan device. Not exactly the ideal ingredients for a peaceful family night, but it’s still better than watching reruns of Mrs. Brown’s Boys.

Joe Anderson and Yasmin Al-Khudhairi star as Karl and Vanessa Mellor, a couple already hanging by a thread before discovering that their son has become host to something deeply unpleasant. With family counselling unlikely to shift a demonic presence, they turn to an ancient pagan device known as the spirit lock. It sounds like the sort of object sensible people would leave buried, but desperate parents rarely make sensible horror movie decisions.

Behind the camera is Steven Fierberg, the acclaimed cinematographer whose credits include Secretary, Emily in Paris and The Affair. Having spent years making other people’s stories look beautiful, Fierberg is now turning his eye towards pagan curses, spiritual torment and a family being torn apart from within.

Tim Downie also stars in this collision of domestic drama and occult horror, which asks how far parents will go to save their child, and what might follow them back when they venture too far.

The Spirit Lock is available on UK digital from September 7 courtesy of Seven Tales, check out the trailer below.
