The Untethered Geek Presents: A Brief History of The Highlander Franchise

There can be only one! The iconic tagline from the original Highlander, as it turns out there can be only five Highlander movies, two live-action TV shows, and several animated versions. So, there can be only lots of Highlander, and now a reboot is on the way from John Wick director Chad Stahelski, and Highlander fever is set to dominate the world once again.

The Untethered Geek is back with all-new episodes casting his ever-vigilant eye over movies old and new. To kick off the new series, The Untethered Geek celebrated the news that Henry Cavill has been cast as the lead in the long-mooted Highlander reboot. Naturally, as his geekdom knows no bounds, he just can’t help himself and provide a brief history of the entire Highlander franchise.

If you’re not familiar with The Highlander movies, it’s that age-old tale of a 16th century Highlander (Christopher Lambert) who is killed in battle only to discover that he is an immortal who is destined to battle other immortals to the death to claim the ultimate prize. Trained by Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez (Sean Connery), Connor MacLeod must summon the strength to defeat the evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown). That old chestnut of a story.

The first movie was a cult classic and had a straightforward story, but that all went out the window for the sequel. I’ll let The Untethered Geek take it from here as if you haven’t seen the Highlander movies; it’s a franchise that takes a very unexpected turn in the first sequel.
