Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at the end of the Comic-Con panel for Terminator Dark Fate to showcase the first trailer for the long-awaited Top Gun Maverick.

After more than 30 years trying to get a sequel to the 1986 action classic off the ground, Tom Cruise is returning to one of his most career-defining roles. Reteaming with Oblivion director

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Cruise has drafted in regular collaborator Christopher McQuarrie to punch up the script, and likely get ideas for the next Mission Impossible.

Joining Cruise in front of the camera is Jennifer Connolly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Glen Powell, Charles Parnell ), Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Manny Jacinto, Jay Ellis, Kara Wang, Jack Schumacher, Greg Tarzan Davis, Jake Picking, Raymond Lee, Jean Louisa Kelly, Lyliana Wray, and Val Kilmer back as Iceman.

There is no denying the spectacle on offer here from a filmmaking point of view with many of the ariel sequences shot for real. Can any sequel live up to expectations more than three decades on? We’ll have to wait and see, but the trailer promises a thrilling ride. Initially slated for a July 12, 2019 release, Paramount made the wise decision to push the movie back by a year to give the filmmakers more time. Once he has finished work on Top Gun 2, Cruise will go straight into pre-production on the two Mission Impossible sequels that are set to shoot back to back next year.

Top Gun: Maverick is due for release on June 26th 2020 in the US and July 17th 2020 in the UK.

Top Gun: Maverick takes place 34 years after the events of the original film and pits legendary Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as the new flight instructor of Top Gun, in which he guides Bradley, Goose’s son, who seeks to become a pilot much as his father was.
